Week 12: Contemporary Manga
Funny Full Metal Alchemist? This is a Comparison List- With Pictures!
I have to say, my initial reaction was just total delight that the character archetypes (both in visual design and personality) are identical to Full Metal Alchemist. The extreme change in setting makes it just so funny. Its almost as if the characters of Full Metal Alchemist were dropped into an agricultural college in our world and reading this as "Edward Elric just chased a dairy cow and got lost" is incredible.
Silver Spoon was written in 2011- 2019. FMA 2001 - 2010
I had assumed that Silver spoon came first as its much more classically tropey with its character design where FMA flips tropes, uses them to trick you into assuming a character is less complicated than they really are, and generally only uses tropes for occasional comedy, and never as a support to lean on.
Here is a list of my comparisons of the characters and how they're similar/different:
FMA MANGA/BROTHERHOOD SILVER SPOON
_________________________________________________________________________________
Edward Elric Yuugo Hachiken
Talented in a way those around them aren't. Doesn't want to go back to their parents. Is using the job/major they have as a means to an end. Initial reaction to everything that surprises them is aggression/yelling. Doesn't understand the people around them. Good at learning.

Winry Rockbell Aki Mikage
Not afraid of working hard, kind to others, not afraid to punch the main character.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Scar Ichiro Komaba
Intense, good at what they do, quiet, and everyone is afraid of them because they seem scary.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Ling Yao Shinnosuke Aikawa
Seemingly airheaded, secretly hotheaded- and always too sure of themselves. They act fast, often without thinking and for some reason people tend to follow.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Sheska Mayumi Toshino
She's doing her best and though clumsy, can still get things done when they count.

its spoilers if I say this guys name so I wont Hajime Nishikawa
(SPOILERS) this is the second greed when he's good. Acts invincible- but still a good guy.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Gluttony Taro Bepu
Flipped Tropes, with Taro being kind, Gluttony only caring about his own needs.
_________________________________________________________________________________
May Chang /Nina Tucker Ikeda
Shy to outspoken. This one hurt a little.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Maes Hughes Shin 'ei Okawa
Comedic relief from a deeper character that contributes more than just jokes. A like-able personality, though can be annoying on occasion.
_________________________________________________________________________________
Vato Falman Sakuragi Sensei
What do they even do again?
_________________________________________________________________________________
Izumi Curtis Fuji Sensei
Riza Hawkeye
Olivier Armstrong
They're badass, tough, and they're gonna do what they want- even if its not necessarily "cool".
_________________________________________________________________________________
Alex Louis Armstrong Todoroki Sensei
These are the same person.
